武夷山风景名胜区主要景区方圆70平方公里，平均海拔350米，属典型的丹霞地貌，素有“碧水丹山”、“奇秀甲东南”之美誉，是首批国家级重点风景名胜区之 一，于1999年12月被联合国教科文组织列入《世界遗产名录》,荣膺“世界自然与文化双重遗产”。成为全人类共同的财富。
武夷的美感在于山。由于远古时期地壳运动，加之重力崩塌、雨水侵蚀、风化剥落的综合作用，使山体发生奇特变化：峰岩上升，沟谷下陷；山色因地热氧化而显红褐，山形因挤压而倾东。它是全国200多处丹霞地貌中发育最为典型者。地壳运动使这里的奇峰怪石千姿百态，有的直插云霄，有的横亘数里，有的如屏垂挂，有的傲立雄踞，有的亭亭玉立……就武夷山的景观而言，则是神似居多，似乎更加耐人品味。
武夷的灵性在于水。武夷山麓中有众多的清泉、飞瀑、山涧、溪流。流水潺潺，如诉如歌，给武夷山注入了生机，增添了动感，孕育了灵气。其中，最具诱惑的莫过于九曲溪。九曲溪发源于武夷山自然保护区黄岗山南麓，全长60公里，流经景区9.5公里，山环水转，水绕山行，自有风情。游人可自星村码头凭籍一弓形古朴的竹筏，随波逐流，饱赏山水大观，抬头可览奇峰，俯首能赏水色。“曲曲山回转，峰峰水抱流
